F9 The Fast Saga (2021)

Fast and Furious 9 is back and better than ever. You have to see to believe. Meant to be seen on the big screen as intended to experience the magical touch of Cinema. The Fast and Furious franchise, as well as Hollywood in general, are known for their over-the-top stunts, muscular emoting, and overall balls-to-the-wall insanity, and F9 is no exception. Returning director Justin Lin is one of the Fast and Furious cast who endlessly cycle in and out of the now lengthy series, and while none of the F9 cast will have known they were making the film that welcomed society back to movie theaters, they’re clearly having the kind of awesome time we all need right now.

Look, cinema is a medium in which a supercar can turbo-boost off a cliff and be grabbed by a fighter jet, or it’s a medium in which a supercar can turbo-boost off a cliff and be caught by a fighter plane. Cinema is insanely cool.

Vroom! Bwoosh! Flex! Vin Diesel! John Cena! At long last, it’s Fast and Furious 9. Cars! Magnets! Explosions! None of it matters! Caars!

All that counts is that things start blowing up and don’t stop. “As long as we respect the rules of physics, we’ll be OK,” Chris “Ludacris” Bridges states in Fast and Furious 9 at one point. What he fails to say is that these are physics rules as defined by Looney Tunes cartoons. I’m not joking when I say that several of the film’s set pieces revolve around a massive magnet. It’d be better if it came in a container with ACME printed on it. You’d think that Fast and Furious 10 and 11 would finish with Vin and his pals painting a tunnel on a mountain and driving through it. Then, of course, blowing it up.

Meanwhile, Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson have established themselves as comedic relief, so the movie will sometimes pause to watch them have fun. Nothing they say quite counts as a joke, and their shtick is a big part of why this event is two and a half hours long.

The only joke that feels like it may have originated from a script is a discussion about how the gang must be unbreakable in order to endure so much craziness. Although it underlines how the more hair-raising violence has no consequences, it’s a humorous piece.

It’s become a cliche to marvel at how far these crazy action sequences have strayed from the more grounded original picture — which was based on a true tale! F9, on the other hand, emphasizes the gap by including a prologue section that tells the Toretto family’s genesis narrative. Yes, this is the Fast and Furious sequel to the Godfather.

The villain is a compellingly intimate foe thanks to the flashbacks, but John Cena is one of the weaker connections here. Unlike Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, whose entrance a few films ago sent the franchise onto a new path, Cena is an uninspiring opponent. Still, it’s cool to see a steroid-jacked flick like this depict such stereotypically masculine physicality undermined by such emotional fragility.

Yes, you did hear me correctly. In a review of a Fast and Furious film, I merely stated “Godfather II” and “emotional fragility.” You didn’t think that was going to happen, did you?

With its large ensemble, typical soap opera twists, and unending computer-enhanced nonsensical violence, Fast and Furious 9 might be a genuine disaster. However, it’s a great night at the movies. Fast! Furious! Family! Vroooommm!
